There’s a lot of confusion about the practical differences between long codes and short codes when it comes to text messaging.

In brief, short codes are multi-digit number that can send up to thirty SMS messages per second, and are perfect if you need your application to send text messages in large quantities or under time constraint. They tend to be significantly more expensive, especially if you want to pick the actual number, but are the best choice for marketing applications and one way messages between the app and users.

Long codes, on the other hand, are standard ten digit telephone numbers which can only send one text message per second, significantly less than a short code. They allow businesses to have a specific and recognizable phone number, as opposed to short codes which may be shared between multiple companies. Long codes can send and receive text messages but also voice and fax, whereas short codes are only good for SMS.
