Voice over IP (VoIP) Software

A broad subject which deals with sending and receiving voice over the Internet. Generally, the term is used to describe either the platform upon which such software would be hosted on or an application which would reside on such a platform.

Types of VoIP software

The simplest form of VoIP software is an application which connects two people using the internet allowing them to speak. Examples of this are Skype or Google Talk.   Please note that on the large scale that the previously mentioned applications are deployed, they are anything but simple.

The next tier of VoIP Software allows humans to interact with computers to receive information and connect people to each other. For example a company telephone system which allows a customer to call in, hear options and receive up to date information. Or a VoiceBroadcast system such as www.callfire.com which allows users to send automated VoiceBroadcast messages to a large number of recipients.

Several hosted services such as CallFire have Application Programming Interfaces (API) which allow developers to write VoIP Software using the CallFire platform. This allows integration with existing applications, allowing CRM and other customer management software to initiate complex voice broadcast and other calls directly from their own internal interfaces.
