VUI

CallFire - design your VUI (Voice User Interface)

A term used to describe the interface offered to users when they call into IVRs. For example a simple VUI would be a system where by a user could call into a phone line and press 1 to hear the phrase ‘Hello World’.  Usually VUIs are significantly more complicated than this example and ideally allow users to intuitively traverse complicated information rapidly. For example a system whereby a user can call in and hear recent stock prices from their portfolio.  At CallFire, we are most concerned with VUI as it relates to delivering simple Voice Broadcast messages. The complexity generally arises from differentiating human and answering machines and quickly conveying relevant information to the user.

VUI design tips:

  • Comply with all relevant state and federal Do Not Call restrictions
  • Repeat the contents of the first 7 seconds of your message for voicemail broadcast.
  • Convey your core message within the first 10 seconds
  • Provide the user with relevant options quickly (Press 1 to speak with someone now, or press 8 to be removed from the calling list)
